Surgeon In Brief With Sam Anand Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon OPN: What made you choose Orthopaedics? SA: I have always been interested in engineering even before I started my medical career. Once I decided to become a doctor the only field that combined both medicine and engineering was orthopaedics.OPN: Where did you train? SA: I qualified as a doctor in Coimbatore, India and I did my basic orthopaedic training in Pondicherry, India followed by higher orthopaedic training in the UK.OPN: What are your specialist areas? SA: My areas of interest are the upper limb and trauma especially sports related injuries and joint replacements.OPN: What are the best and worst aspects of your job? SA: The best aspects of the job is the satisfaction of getting people literally back on their feet and I suppose the worst aspect is the amount of red tape you have to put up with in your job.OPN: Are there any developments in orthopaedics that excite you? SA: The recent advance in total wrist arthroplasty is something I am watching with keen interest.OPN: What are your thoughts on surgeons who receive financial benefits for using a company’s products? SA: I don’t think that is morally or ethically right.OPN: Are patients becoming too knowledgeable on joint replacement and the implants that are used? SA: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing! I must say though that most patients these days are well informed thanks to the ever expanding internet but sometimes the information available out there is of dubious value and it is the role of the surgeons to keep their patients well informed about the implants they use. This should be based on strong scientifically backed evidence.OPN: Is it right that surgeons are rated and reviewed by patients on the website www.iwantgreatcare.org? SA: In the present climate of patient choice I think it is the right way forward and it should be become more widespread.OPN: What aspect of the industry would you change, if you could? SA: I am sceptical of products being on the market without having undergone rigorous scientific clinical trials.
