Decade of success for team helping orthopaedic patients

Medical staff and patients are celebrating the 10th anniversary of a specialist service that has helped thousands of patients who have undergone hip and knee replacement surgery in South Warwickshire.

The South Warwickshire Accelerated Transfer Team (SWATT) is an orthopaedic team consisting of nurses, physiotherapists and technical instructors all dedicated to ensuring a fast recovery for patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery.

Since the launch of SWATT in 2005 the team has enabled patients to return to the comfort of their own homes two or three days after the operation, whereas previously this could have taken over a week.

Yvonne Gibson, SWATT Team Leader, said: “It is great to see the service reach its 10th birthday.

It is so rewarding for the team to support patients with their recovery in their own homes. I look forward to helping more patients and continuing to deliver safe, compassionate care to the local communities of South Warwickshire.”

Mr James Leach, a patient who has benefited from the service, said: “Five years ago I had a total hip replacement at Warwick, and I cannot speak highly enough of the SWATT Team experience.

“Throughout my short stay in hospital and then back home I was always centre of attention, made to feel important and highly valued.

Since then I honestly have not looked back and have remained active thanks to the benefits of the SWATT Team.”
