Smith & Nephew, the global medical technology business, have unveiled Education and Evidence, a new e-learning platform for surgeons to access and share peer-to-peer educational resources. Supporting joint repair and replacement, extremities, and trauma specialties, the member-based service at www.smith-nephew.com/education already hosts more than 1,000 videos, articles, surgical techniques, podcasts, training courses, tablet PC apps and iBooks.
The launch coincided with the opening day of Global Insights: The Future of Hip and Knee Surgery, Smith & Nephew’s medical education event in Copenhagen, Denmark, attended by more than 450 orthopaedic surgeons from 33 different countries.
“Smith & Nephew has been supporting healthcare professionals for over 150 years,” says Michael Frazzette, President of Smith & Nephew’s Advanced Surgical Devices division. “We proudly continue this tradition by giving our customers digital access to trusted, peer-to-peer educational resources at the most convenient time and on their device of choice.”
Education and Evidence uses an innovative search engine and self-profiling to tailor content to users, while also enabling the sharing of resources with colleagues. It includes links to the first two in a series of surgical technique guides, which are available through the iBooks Store for use on the Mac and iPad platforms. And the site also hosts a new iPad and Android app on ligament balancing, which features 22 videos and more than 60 screens of content.
“I find this level of commitment and creativity among our industry partners to be invaluable,” says Prof Carsten Perka, MD, of Berlin, Germany, a chairperson at the Global Insights conference. “Smith & Nephew sets the new standard today. Learning from my peers and sharing knowledge across these platforms will help me bring new ideas, new ways of working and treating patients, into my clinical practice. And as I publish my work on the website, others can learn from me.”
